Commodore Emprom Flash Card.
Developers & Kiosk users only.

In the development of the CDTV one of the most updated parts was the CDTV`s custom Rom (U34 & U35) which hold the CDTV`s screens, CDDA Player & CD-Rom Drivers, To save developers having to open there CDTV up and replace these chips every time a new version came out a card holding two Emproms (Electro-Magnetic Programmable Read Only Rom) and very little else, What this card did was to let you update the ROM just using a program on the CDTV, Just like on modern PC Bios ("es"?) and some Amiga cards (Like the Cyberstorm).
The card had a very short development, Partly because Commodore developers know what to do, Partly because the card is such a simple design, Saying that they did earn there money because it came in two colours, Blue or the standard green, At a guess the green card is an external release for developers and the blue card was used internally at Commodore (As I own the blue one and its out of a CDTV prototype).
The card fits in place of the two roms (@ U34 & U35, Just above the CPU) and connects to CN 29 (Which is used to write enable/disable the Emproms and some CDTV`s may not have this connector installed. (Although the holes where the connector fits is)).
The card was only available to developers (Who are members of CATS (Commodore Amiga Technical Support)) and companies making Kiosks. It is a shame for all of the normal CDTV users as the card let you upgrades the operating system to version 3.1 (Or at the time it was version 2.04). It took until late 1995 for normal CDTV owners to be able to upgrade there OS past V1.3.
The cards design is such that if the worst happens and the data held on the chips gets totally corrupted or deleted the CDTV will still work (and would just look like a normal Amiga 500 would) and can have the information re-uploaded in seconds.
Buying one now would be very hard, If you keep an eye on Ebay you may see one but before buying you should check to see if CN 29 on your CDTV motherboard has pins in place else you will have to get a soldering iron out.
The software and BIN files needed will be available in the Downloads section of this site soon.
