Mas Player. (Audio Mpeg decoder)

The CDTV can do lots of things, Play full screen movies, Can play ten minute MOD files which are only 150Kb, Can play endless high quality IFF Audio files and so on, The only thing the CDTV doesnt like doing is decompressing files, It can cope with Jpeg`s, Thats not so bad, It can even unzip any archive known to man (Or woman) but Mpeg files are one thing it can not do, Unfortunatly Mpeg has become the largest movie and audio format of the century, The CDTV CR had an expansion slot for a Mpeg decoder, The CD32 had a slot for an Mpeg decoder but no other Amiga did (Including the CDTV) so does this mean that the CDTV can`t do it?
Never! :) With the help of the Mas player the CDTV can decode CD`s full of Mp3`s with almost no CPU usage at all, How is this done? Simple a hardware Mpeg decoder chip out of a personal walkman style Mp3 player was ripped out, Stuck on a PCB and connected to the CDTV`s parallel port (OK, It was a little more complicated than that) and you have a CDTV that can decode any Mpeg audio stream without a seconds thought, The audio is output to a small 3.5mm audio connector on the Mas player.
This card doesnt let you play video Mpeg`s (Although it would speed them up as the audio wouldnt need decoding, Just dumping to the Mas player)
The software that comes with the card is fully multitasking (So you can listen to Mp3`s while doing something else, Unlike the CDTV`s CD player) and uses a 32 colour low resolution screen (Which works on anything from an Amiga 1000 to an Amiga 4000T). It also comes with masmpeg.device which is a mpeg.device compatable driver for 3rd party developers to use.
The card requires an Amiga running OS1.3 or above with 1 Meg of memory unfortunatly even though the CDTV does have OS1.3 it wont load the software directly from disk, instead you have to load your Workbench and then load the software.
The card is available from large Amiga shops including Eyetech.
